This Ol' House Thursday...New Bed = New Bedding

My husband and I just got a new bed...so, new bedding, right?
I LOVE to shop.
I HATE settling on something I, um...don't really like.
Expensive duvet covers and pillows that I didn't really like...were haunting me.  Everywhere.
A while ago I pinned a picture on Pinterest...and my mom thought I could make my own!

Turns out...this iis exactly what I wanted (for now, you know I love change!)

I bought two big canvas drop cloths off of Amazon, sewed my right sides together...and voila!
A couple of cute, ruffly pillows (in my Etsy shop) and I LOVE it!

Yes, I am aware there are wrinkles...I like them!

Now for a headboard...I want some kind of barn wood.  Rustic...

Love the natural look and feel of my duvet cover...never know, I may start custom making these with initials...check the The Vintage Barn on Etsy soon!

Have a great rest of your week!

Julie

  1. Looks great, and it's custom! I sew but have been intimidated by the thought of making a duvet cover. I have a white down duvet just screaming to be covered. :) You make it sound do-able. Thanks for the post, and enjoy your new bedding. Glad you didn't settle!

  2. That is completely awesome! And I so totally understand about not wanting to "settle" for something you don't really love. I've been haunting the online bedding stores and I just can't find something I'd want to spend that much money for. This though..this I love!

BTW - where in the Central Valley do you live? I grew up on a farm between Modesto and Turlock.

    1. I hate spending $$ on something I just don't love! Oh, and Modesto and Turlock are just North of us...our dairy is near Merced. Love this area!

  4. I've been wanting to do this forever, but I can't find drop cloths without those unseemly seams! Where did you find these and what sizes did you use?? I need one large enough for a king duvet!

    1. Hi...thank you for stopping by! I bought these at Lowes...they are Hawk Brand and I bought a 9 x 12 ft. I have bought drop cloth of of Amazon before...nice quality there as well.

I do have a seam running down the middle of my bed...horizontally. I just fold the duvet down and cover it with fold and a bunch of pillows. You won't know the difference!

  6. Thank you so much! I'm off to Lowes in the morning. I have yards of a beautiful faux "you couldn't tell the difference" fabric in a French blue that I'm using to make a bed skirt, and this will be the perfect match for me as I was looking for something French linen'ish without that French price tag! I love to mix textures. Your room is divine. I could lock myself away in it and never come out!

  7. Your new bed is amazing, Julie. It almost gives me a sense of relaxation just by looking at it. Your choice of having new bedding is advisable to complement the new mattress that would give you comfort during sleep. Thanks for sharing! :)

  26. Hey – great blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a really nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my blogs but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?

  27. I'm excited. I was recently given the world's ugliest king size comforter. It's still in good shape, but hideous. I can cover it with the drop cloth cover. Like I said, it's a king, wondering what size drop cloth I should get. Thanks for the inspiration!
