Transformation Tuesday...Honey, Hutch!

One of my new favorite things...yep, she's a keeper!

About a year ago...I spotted this deep in the garage at a friend's yard sale.
I asked if she was selling it...and told me the whole story behind it.
She told me how it was her Nana's.
How she loved it.
How the whole family loved it.
How very special it is.

Then...she told me to "make her an offer."
Ummm...I couldn't.
How do you put a price on that?
Looking back...I should of...right then and there.

Months went by...and I would ask my friend about that hutch.
She said she wasn't quite ready to sell the hutch, but when she was...she would call me.
No call.
Still no call.
Nope, she hadn't called yet.
Finally, one random May Sunday morning (actually the Sunday of Clovis Junk Days)
my friend called and said I could come and get the hutch!

I couldn't get to her house fast enough...hooked up the cattle trailer, grabbed my hubby...
and we brought her home!
Don't you worry Nana...your hutch is WELL LOVED!!!

This hutch was beautiful...but, I knew a little "love" (translation...color) would do the trick!
I started out by cleaning the hutch really well...inside and out.
Then, I took off all the hardware and decided to just clean them and put them back on after I painted and keep them original...they are beautiful!

I have been in a Farmhouse White mood...so, that is what I used.
Mixing my own Chalk-Like Paint has been something I have been doing for a while.
It is easy, it's not nearly as expensive as the other brands and you can use your favorite brand.

That picture above (and the others above are with my cell phone...sorry) is after two coats of the paint.  I wanted to have great coverage...and two light coats did the job.

I LOVE the outcome...perfectly "imperfect" for my home.
Not a white white...but, a creamy off white...that looks great with our dark barn wood ceiling.

The distressed finish fits my home as well...and, I don't have to be so fussy with it!
I always distress in natural wear areas...near handles, edges, corners and
where fingers would have been.  Distressing is easy, and can be done using a smooth sanding block if you don't want too much distressing.  You can also use a rough grade sandpaper and a power sander for a more chippy, distressed rough-worn look.
Look at the lines and grooves...you may want to distress those areas to really show them off.

 \
I LOVE the scroll work on this piece...the lines are just beautiful!

So pretty....

(This picture is a little odd...I am actually on our kitchen counter to taking this picture.)

I love these!
My mom gave them to me a few months ago at our Fancy Flea Market, that pail in the back was to carry cream or milk from the barn and the other is a butter dish with a little hole to drain the water.

One of my favorite things about this hutch...are the crosses on the doors.

Love the warm color...

Love those crosses and hardware...

LOVE my hutch!!
Thanks, Jeanne!

I hope you have a great day...stay cool (supposed to be 114 degrees here!)

Love & Junk~

  11. Julie that turned out just beautiful. I am sure that Nana would be very pleased that you are loving her hutch and showing it off so well. It would have been very sad to have left it in the garage!

  15. Julie,
what an amazing job you did on that fabulous hutch! I've had a chest sitting in my dining room for a year waiting for a paint job, you've inspired me to "get er done"!
